That form of kowliangwhich somewhat resemblesbroom corn is found alsoin Korea and Japan. Itwould be classed as verypoor brush in the UnitedStates. Some improved broom corn is grown in Japan, but it is prob-ably from seed originally secured in Australia, Europe, or the UnitedStates. Pacific Islands. In Australia the standard varieties are all importations from the United States. Numerous native varieties from India and the British colonies in Africa have been tested in Australia recently and a few are likely to persist in cultivation, at least for some years. Europe. Pliny (TO A. D.) records that a variety of sorghum was intro-duced from India into Italy about ten years previously. Its cultiva-tion in Italy has ap- parently been con-t i n u o u s since theearliest introduction,and it was there thatthe name surgo, orsorgo, was first ap-plied to the the extensive com-merce of Greece andRome with Africaand Asia it is prob-able that other im-portations of sor-g h u m reached thenorthern sho
