The idea of this society was first conceived inCalifornia, the California society being instituted in 1875 andcompleting its organization on July 4, 1876. Col. Hubbard isgiven the credit of organizing the society and in a still greaterdegree, of maintaining it through trials which would have dis-couraged a less patriotic man. The esteem in which his servicesin this connection are held is evidenced by the following resolu-tions passed by the California society Sons of the American Rev-olution September 3, 1892 : 1st. Hubbard, who aided in its inceptionand has almost single-handed brought the Society through trialsand discouragements which beset all new societies, to its presentprosperous condition ; therefore it recognizes him as the founderof the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution,and therefore founder of the Society at large. 2d. That the National Society of the Sons of the AmericanRevolution is earnestly requested in its procedings and publica-tions to recognize Col. A. S. Hubbard as the founder of the Cal-ifornia Society, and thereby founder of the Society at large, anhonor which by his patriotic labors he has merited, and to whichhe is justly entitled.
