Rothchild's Giraffe stopping to eat a leafy lunch in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, Africa

Rothchild's Giraffe standing eating a leafy lunch in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, Africa The Rothchild’s Giraffe is an endangered species, with fewer than 670 individuals in the wild today. These giraffes were first named and described by Lord Walter Rothchild, a passionate zoologist, in the early 1900s. Although the giraffe was free ranging and abundant at that time it is now extinct in Sudan and only 13 populations remain in Uganda and Kenya. Human population expansion, poaching and loss of habitat have resulted in this reduction. The Rothchild's giraffe is easily recognised. Its coat patches tend to be much less 'jagged' than those of the Masai (or Common) Giraffe and are found on a cream coloured background. Rothchild's Giraffes are also quite light in colour. Their most defining feature however is that there are no markings found below the knees.
