Ordinarily, there are three major calyces; there may, 60 PYELOGRAPHY however, be an increase or decrease from the usual frequently but two major calyces are visible, onemajor calyx rarely, if ever, occurs without the presence ofsome pathologic condition in the kidney. In Fig. 24 fourdistinct and separate major calyces are visible in the pelvesof both kidneys. Although the distention of the right pelvisis incomplete, it suffices to show the outline of the calyces.
