He is the firstancestor of this familyof whom there is definiterecord, and is styled inthe Homage Roll as ofMurthoxton or Murth-ockstoun, now Murdies-toun, in the county ofLanark, which he is tra-ditionally said to haveacquired by his marriage with the daughter and heir of Murthockstoun of that Ilk. But he had also lands in Selkirkshire, which were restored to him in September 1296. He is said to have died about 1320.^ His next successor on record was. Robert Scott of Rankilburn and Murthockston, whodied before 7 December 1389, and was succeeded by his son. On this work this article is chiefly based, and it is tacitly referredto when no other autliority is mentioned specifically. In it, however,Richard le Scot is said to have died in 1320, and to be succeeded by aMichael. But of this last there is no evidence, while Michael Scot wasthen the laird of Balwearie in Fife.
