Lansdown is supposed to derive its namefrom a monument erected upon it by GeorgeLord Lansdown, in commemoration of theabovementioned victory. The western sideof this monument is adorned with militarytrophies; on the eastern, are the kings. LONDON TO BATH AND BRISTOL. 155 arms, and those of the Grenville family;and upon a tablet on its north side, areverses descriptive of the battle, and inpraise of the valour of Sir Bevil Grenville;as also the following inscription: TO THE IMMORTAL MEMORY OF HIS RENOWNED GRANDFATHER, AND VALIANT CORNISH FRIENDS, WHO CONQUERED, PYING IN THE ROYAL CAUSE, JULY 5, 1643, THIS COLUMN WAS DEDICATED £Y THE HONOURABLE GEORGE GRENVILLE, LORD LANSDOWN, 1720. DULCE EST PRO PATRIA MORI. On the south tablet is the following in-scription: In this battle, on the Kings part, were more officers and gentlemen of quality slain than private men; but that which would have clouded any victory, and made the loss of others less spoken of, was the death of Sir Bevil Grenville.
