Quantum dot sample seen in ultraviolet (UV) light. This sample consists of a solution of cadium selenide (CdSe), which is responding to the ultraviolet light by emitting visible light. Such solutions can be engineered to specific wavelengths, and are used for applications such as tracers (quantum dots). This sample has a wavelength of 590 nanometres, which corresponds to a colour of orange on the spectrum of visible light. Sample courtesy Nanoco Technologies.
