Kyoto, Japan: Kiyomizu-dera, literally “Pure Water Temple” is officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera, an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple was founded in 798 during the early Heian period. The present buildings were constructed without using a single nail in 1633, ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. It got its name from the waterfall, Kiyomizu , which runs off the nearby hills.
