Dinoflagellate. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum balticum. Dinoflagellates are unicellular (single-celled) protozoans, some of which produce toxins that are responsible for shellfish poisoning. This dinoflagellate produces okadaic acid, which causes diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
