A prisoner at forced labor splits wood in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The photo is from 1937, when Sachsenhausen held internal enemies of the regime. Sachsenhausen was a forced labour camp rather than an extermination centre. That said, abuse, malnutrition and killings were the norm. Tens of thousands died there, including 10,000 Russian prisoners of war killed in 1941. The camp was also home to a medical experimentation unit.
