The utilisation of centrifugal force is of great antiquity, but itis only since the invention of the steam engine that its practicalnsefulness has been generally recognised. Watts pendulumgovernor for steam engines ranks among the earlier and betterknown efforts of inventors to utilise the radial accelerationwhich all rotating bodies possess, and it also forms a readymeans of noticing how enormously this radial force increases inamount as the speed of rotation rises. The special application of this force to the extraction ofliquids from solids is now very general and probably dates backfrom a very early period. It is not very difficult to see whyunder centrifugal action a liquid should separate itself from asolid which it may be saturating. We know that if any bodybe moving in a straight line, it requires force
