A view looking along the High Angle Battery, Portland, Dorset, UK, showing where the gun emplacements would have been

The Verne High Angle Battery was built in a quarry on the top of the Isle of Portland on the south coast of England in 1892. It was built as part of a range of defensive measures against a perceived threat of invasion from France. The guns, hidden behind the embankment were fired high into the air (hence high angle) to land on the decks of hostile ships. During World War 2 Ack-ack guns were installed and the site was used as storage in preparation for D-Day.
