BEECHER, Edward, clergyman, was born atEast Hampton, N. Y., Aug. 37, 1803, the secondson of Lyman and Roxana (Foote) Beecher. His earlyeducation was acquired at home, both his father andmother being his teachers. He was there preparedfor college, entered at Yale, and was graduated in1832. Destined for a preacher,he studied theology at Andoverand at New Haven, where heafterward was a tutor at Yaleuntil in 1835 he removed to Bos-ton to take charge of the Con-gregational church on Parkstreet. He served this congre-gation for five years, when hewas elected president of Illinoiscollege, Jacksonville. Here hecontinued for fourteen years,during which the college in-creased wonderfully, and thegraduates who went from itsdoors during Dr. Beechers pres-idency became prominent as pio-neers in the development of thenew West.
