This would be modified when the coils are quite short, as we do not advise having tlie sum of the cross-section areas of the pipes in the coils more than four times as great as the area of the flow pipe and, when small pipes are used for the coils, as in your case, this radiation should be cut down from one- third to one-half. Furthermore, we should limit the use of l^/^-inch flows to houses fifty feet in length, 2-inch flows to 100 feet and 2%-ineh flows to 200 feot. In selecting the size of re- turns for houses of different lengths, we should not use IVi-inch returns in coils more than fifty feet long; rather, we should limit 1%-inch returns to a length of seventy-five foot and 2-inch returns to a length of 200 feet. How- ever, except under special conditions, we favor using 2-inch flows and 2-inch returns in houses under fifty feet and 2Vi-inch flows and 2-inch returns in houses between fifty and 200 feet in length. The nunil)er and size of pipes used would be varied by the height of the returns above the top of the boiler, and both might be slightly reduced if the system is placed under pressure.
