Not to be used for advertising or in a defamatory context Ingrown toenail surgery. Doctor applying phenol to the nail matrix (root) of a patient's big toenail that has been partially removed to treat an ingrown toenail. The phenol will prevent that section of the nail from regrowing. A tourniquet has been applied to the toe to reduce bleeding during the procedure. An ingrown toenail is deformed and grows into the flesh of the toe. It is caused by incorrect cutting of the nail, ill-fitting shoes and poor personal hygiene. The flesh the nail is pressing against becomes painfully inflamed and may also become infected.
