As Delpino first demonstrated, the pollen-covered stamens project in the first stage from the flowers (which exhale an odour of citron), while in the second stage the mature stigma protrudes. These parts serve as alighting- and resting-places for insect visitors. During the male stage the stamens lie upon the under-lip of the flower, curving upwards to its entrance, while the style is hidden in the middle.
