Adrenal gland. False-colour computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the abdomen, showing the right adrenal gland. At lower centre, a vertebra is seen (dark blue); on either side of the vertebra are the kidneys (light blue). Above the right kidney (left of vertebra) is the right adrenal gland (black with green core). The large liver is seen (centre left, blue); regions of the digestive tract are at centre right. The adrenals are endocrine glands situated above each kidney. Both steroid sex hormones & adrenalin are secreted from these glands. They maintain blood pressure, suppress inflammatory reactions, control male sex development, and alert the body to stress.
