Token coins were issued when official coinage has been in short supply. They were often referred to as 'Slave Pennies' - African slaves used extensively as the workforce in West Indies sugar plantations. The front of the coin showing the head of an African, wearing a plumed head-dress. Below him the legend reads 'I serve'
