Slavonice, South Bohemia, Czechia: sgraffito on facade of burgher or town house, on Míru náměstí (Peace Square or Lower Square) in the historic centre of Slavonice. The house displaying the sgraffito design in this image is at Míru náměstí 453, built around 1573. Slavonice is among towns of former Bohemia and Moravia renowned for well-preserved wall decorations in sgraffito, the ancient technique of scratching away parts of a surface layer of plaster, stucco or paint to expose a background of a different colour or texture. Slavonice, a small town lying close to the Austrian border, was founded in the 1100s CE and expanded in the 1300s. It owes its current appearance to the building and rebuilding of many houses in the 1500s, when the town was established as a post stage between Prague and Vienna. One of the most important builders was Leopold Esteraich, whose stonemason mark bearing the initials ‘LE’ can be found on many buildings in the town. When the post road lost its importance and the town was decimated by Swedish troops, the plague and the Thirty Years War, it was as if time stopped. As a result, many houses look just as they did at the time of the Renaissance.
