The Heilmann locomotive which is being experimentedwith in France, although an engineering monstrosity initself, may possibly do some good in the way of educationas to the possibilities of electric locomotives. As it nowstands it is about as complicated and difficult to manage apile of mechanism as could be devised for the storage battery is a complication which has not beenintroduced however, which seems rather strange whenthe complexity of the present machine is considered. Itconsists of a dynamo engine and locomotive boilermounted on two eight wheel trucks. Each axle is pro-vided with a gearless motor. The engine and dynamo. boiler; 26 FKET LONG; (1 1 KEl J>[,K. drive the motors. Besides this there is another smallengine and dynamo to excite the fields of the largedynamo. The supposed advantage of this arrangementover an ordinary locomotive is that the engine can berunning at full speed and developing its maximum horse-power when starting the train. The total weight is notons. The engine is a cross compound, and the twocranks are i8o degrees apart. The cylinders beingplaced at opposite ends of the frame. The advantage ofthe 180 degree arrangement is to have the two pistons and crank rods counterbalance each other. The nominalhorse power of the engines and boiler is about 1,200, andthe motors are to correspond. The fuel and water iscarried alongside the boiler in compartments, as shown inthe engraving. The stack is at the rear, to improvethe draft. The length over all is S2J^ feet. Some ideaof the simplicity of the machine can be gained from the
