The track-brake shoe is placed between the two pairs of wheels, and, instead of being forced upon therails through an effortfrom the car, is drawnto the rails by an elec-tro-magnet suspendedfrom the car, thereby notmerely adding its fric-tion to the unimpairedfriction of the wheel brake but also actually increasing the rail pres-sure of the wheels to the extent that the supporting springs for thetrack shoes and magnets are in tension through the descent of the trackshoes to the rails.
