Foot of a diabetic patient with an ulcer and neuropathic arthropathy of the foot, also known as Charcot foot. Ulcers are a fairly common complication of diabetes as it can lead to neuropathy (nerve damage) and the breakdown of small blood vessels, both of which are risk factors for ulcers. Treatment is with antibiotics and regular cleansing of the wound. Charcot foot is a progressive degeneration of a weight-bearing joint. It causes weakening of the bones and leads to the joints collapsing and changing shape. It can lead to severe deformity and may require amputation.
