It was finally voted to retain the num-ber of Senators at thirty-two and to elect them for two-year terms, each from a single-member district. It wasalso voted that Assemblymen should be elected fromsingle-member districts. There was much debate overthe provision that no member of the Legislature shouldduring his term of office receive any civil appointmentwithin the State or to the Senate of the United strong attempt was made to strike out the prohibitionagainst appointment or election to the Senate of theUnited States, but it was retained. The greatest fight of all in the convention was overthe reorganization of the judiciary. The committeethat had been appointed to consider that subject was.
