The lower lip or labium forms the 4- jointed, grooved sheath, and the mandibles and maxillae form the four lance-like piercers, while the labrum is a scale-like flap to which, apparently, the piercers are attached. It will be obiserved that there are no palpi on either the maxillae or labium, but the parts have been modified for piercing and sucking.
