Abert's Squirrel (Sciurus aberti) tassel-eared squirrel

With its long ears, the Abert's Squirrel (Sciurus aberti) tassel-eared squirrel looks almost like a rabbit. This denizen of Ponderosa Pine forests has a very limited range in the mountains in parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico. A variant, the Kaibab Squirrel living on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Utah, was previously thought to be a separate species. This all-black variant was found living at the 7800-foot level near Genessee, Colorado.
