Multipurpose building located next to the Holsten Gate in Lübeck, Germany
Lübeck, officially Hanseatic City of Lübeck (German: Hansestadt Lübeck), is the second most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, after Kiel. The medieval center of the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, highlighting the brick constructions in the Baltic Gothic style, such as the Holsten Gate. The city is divided into ten municipalities and 35 districts. The municipality of the Center (Innenstadt) is located on a river island surrounded by the rivers Trave and Wakenitz. The municipality of Travemünde, seventeen kilometers from the centre, lies on the shores of the Baltic Sea and is a popular seaside resort and port at the mouth of the Trave River.
