Nile crocodile, skin examination. Veterinarian injecting an anaesthetic into a young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). Tests will be carried out on its blood and bony scales (osteoderms). This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres when fully grown. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young grow from 30 centimetres to metres in length over two years, before leaving the nest area.
