ON January 30, 1899—curiously enough the two hundredand fiftieth anniversary of the death of Charles I.—amonument to Oliver Cromw^ell w^as erected in the Par-liament House, with the consent of the English Government. The bust was made by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini from sit-tings by the Protector about 1655. When the House ofCommons refused to sanction a vote of money for a statue,Mr. Charles Wertheimer, of 21 Norfolk Street, Park Lane,London, generously and patriotically offered this beautifulwork of art as a free gift to the nation.
