Ectopic hydrocephalic shunt. Coloured X-ray of the abdomen of a patient, showing an ectopic (abnormally positioned) hydrocephalic shunt (blue). A hydrocephalic shunt is used to treat hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The shunt, a prosthetic one-way valve,drains the excess CSF from the brain to the peritoneal cavity where it can be reabsorbed into the blood stream.
