The district around all these lakes, and extending between the volcano of Tonga- riro and the sea, is a zone of hot springs, solfataras, fumeroles, and mud volcanoes, more than a thousand in number, which, according to Dr. Hochstetter, far exceeds all others in the world in variety and extent. The largest as well as the most irregular and picturesque of the group of lakes is Tarawera, surrounded by rugged rocky bluffs, shaded by fine woods, and bounded on the- tow h tat mar.
