Col. Thatcher Cardon, 47th Medical Group commander, won the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Space Poop Challenge, beating more than 5,000 competitors and winning him $15,000. Cardon’s invention, the “perineal access port,” allows astronauts to manage human waste in a space suit for up to six continuous days. As a flight surgeon, Cardon used his expertise in the field to attack major problems, such as space suit air pressure.
