Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a metatarsal comb on a leg segment of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Only males display this comb, which is believed to be used during mating to grip the female. Drosophila is chosen as the subject of genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it is easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. This SEM is of a normal fruit fly - the wild type known as Oregon R. Magnification: x1000 at 8x10-inch size.
