This hotel was opened in 1904, and is a mag-nificent edifice, occupying an imposing situation onTwelfth street, the broadest thoroughfare in SaintLouis, and extends from Locust to St. Charlesstreets. The building is fireproof, built of light brick andtrimmed with buff bedford stone, and is of com-manding architectural interest in plain renaissancestyle. The entire first floor represents the handsomestinterior west of New York City. Costly marbles,wrought and cast bronze designs, and beautiful SAINT LOUIS 121. 122 SAINT LOUIS arabesques, have been used to produce a magnifi-cent ensemble. The ladies parlor is one of the most beautifulin the Ignited States, finished entirely in gold, withtapestry walls, after the style of Louis XV. Overthe doors are mural decorations, carrying out theatmosphere of the period. Carpets and furniturefor this room were imported from Europe. The rotunda, in Louis XVL style, is lined withimported Pavanazzo marble. The stairway is ingold bronze, the railing being worked out in beau-tiful designs. The mural frieze extends around theentire rotunda, illustrating the development andprogress of the West, from the time of the earlyFrench settlers to the Louisiana Purchase Exposi-tion. This frieze is done in beautiful colors to har-monize with the tints of the marble and bronze. The gentlemens cafe, the handsomest room,is designed in modern French Renaissance.
