Lagoons are located in atolls, faros and at the back of fringing reefs. Depths of the majority of lagoons are general ly less than 10 m, but some large lagoons may reach over 50 m. Sediments on the lagoonal slopes are mainly carbonate sand with coral debris or shingles.
