Light micrograph (longitudinal section) of human skeletal muscle, showing several individual muscle fibres (pink) separated by connective tissue (thin white strips). The regular cross-striations of the muscle fibres are myofibrils, cylindrical structures lying parallel to each other & which contain the contractile proteins of the muscle fibre. The dark stained flattened shapes are nuclei, which lie in a peripheral position in skeletal muscle cells. Magnification: x4 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
