Annual report . re=Cambrian Geology of Southeastern Ontario 59 THE MADOC AREA1NTR0DI CTION The Madoc area shown on the accompanying map, No. LLd, contains about sevensquare miles, occupying parts of the townships of Madoc and Huntingdon, Hastingscounty. The town of Madoc, in the township of the same name, the centre of a prosperousfarming community, was the site of a pioneer iron industry, a small furnace, built in1S37, being operated for eight or nine years, using wood and charcoal as fuel. The ironore was obtained from the Seymour mine, distant about three miles north of the the year 1866 the town witnessed great mining excitement, caused by the discoveryof a pocket of rich gold ore at a point, afterwards known as Eldorado, about eight milesdistant. There was scarcely a lot or homestead in the immediately surrounding countryon which pits or shafts were not sunk. Sinn then iron ore, copper pyrit< s, gold andother minerals have been spasmodically mined in the vicinity. At the present time,. Fig. 26. In the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada are to be found notes and paperson the area, by Logan, Murray, Macfarlane, Coste and other writers. THE PRE=CAMBRIAN GEOLOGY The age relations of certain groups of pre-Cambrian rocks in the Madoc area, asexplained in the legend of the geological map, have not been satisfactorily their own examination of the field, the writers could not come to a decision as tothe relations. During the meeting of the Geological Congress, and at other times, whileon visits to the area, they had the advantage of conferences with workers familiar withthe oldest groups of rocks in various parts of the world.
