The Edinburgh Mail coach near the Mansion House, York in the days of the coaching era. The 'Edinbro' Mail' was worked by three companies, the first owned the coaches between London and York, the second that between York and Newcastle, and the third ran forward to Edinburgh. The Mail coach ran from 1786 to 1842 uninterruptedly. On its last journey Lord Wenlock, asked that the coach would drive through Escrick Park where he and Sir John Lister Kaye , each driving their own coaches bedecked with black ribbons and flags formed a guard of honour to the Black Swan, York.
