Theanterior spurs serveto prevent the band-age slipping, and theposterior ones maybe used to fix thebandage there whenit is desired to pro-duce upward pres-sure at the angle ofthe jaw. Tlie Gunning sphntconsists of a viil-canite cap, lined or unlined with gutta- Fig. 927.—Gunning , covering the (Heatu: Injuries and Diseases teeth and part of the / the Jaws.) alveolus (see Fig. 927). It differs from the Kingsley in havingthe upper surface loosely fitted to the upper 696 This hollowed surface is filled with gutta-percha, Iso that when the splint is applied the upperteeth are embedded in the gutta-percha. Thejaw is fixed with a four-tail bandage. Thesplint is perforated in many places to allowescape of discharge, and for syringing, and hasa large slot-like aperture in the front to allowof introduction of liquid food. The Hern splint is a modification of theGunning and an improvement on it. The uppersurface, instead of fitting the upper teeth allround, has in a few places short raised pillarsof vidcanite hollowed out and filled with gutta-percha. Into these hollows certain of the upperteeth fit. Tlie jaw is fixed with skull- andchin-cap connected at the sides with elasticwebbing and buckles; and it is wise to be carefulnot to exercise too much pressure, as this isliable to promote the formation of abscessesin the inflamed soft parts below the chin. Thechief advantage over the Gunning splint isthat the up
