Foetal monitoring device development. Researcher testing a portable foetal monitoring device (silver, centre) on a mother-to-be. This device, known as the Monica AN24, is capable of detecting and displaying the heart rate of an unborn baby (top trace on screen), as well as the maternal heart rate (2nd from top) and activity (3rd from top). It is small and easy to use so that mothers can keep a regular check on their unborn baby without having to go into hospital. The resulting data can be transmitted wirelessly to a nearby PC or hand-held computer. Photographed at The University of Nottingham, England, UK.
