Philip II and Mary of Portugal

Philip II of Spain (1527-1598) continued his father's war against France and, at the Treaty of Cateau Cambresis, made Spain the chief power of Europe. However, the destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588 made British seapower supreme. In this 1882 illustration, he is pictured with his first wife, Mary of Portugal.
