Epicurus. Engraving of the Greek philosopher Epicurus ( BC). He extended the idea (due to Democritus) that matter consists of atoms, differing in size and shape. In 305 BC, Epicurus established a successful school of philosophy in Athens, where he lived. He is said to have written over 300 scholarly volumes on varied subjects, but only fragments of his work survived.
