Admiral Robert Blake (1598 – 1657) was one of the most important English military commanders and one of the most famous in the 17th century. He is recognised as the chief founder of England's naval supremacy. At the Battle of the Gabbard, aka Battle of the North Foreland, off the coast of Suffolk, England, on 12 and 13 June 1653, Blake decisively defeated the Dutch fleet, sinking or capturing 17 ships without losing one.
