He discharged his trust withparental devotion. His education in early life wassuch mainly as a common school afforded. For abrief period he attended Dartmouth College, butfrom pecuniary causes and the care of his brothersand sister, he did not graduate. He subsequentlyread law, and was admitted to the Bar in 1831, andshortly afterward removed to Illinois, settling first atAlbion, Edwards County, where he established him-self in the practice of law.
