Early days of flight . An old press portrait of Sir Kingsford-Smith England to Australia pilot 1933. Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith, MC, AFC ( 1897 – 1935), known by his friends as Smithy (his true family name), was an early Australian aviator. He made the first transpacific flight from the United States to Australia in 1928 and other notable flights. In partnership with Charles Ulm, Kingsford Smith established Australian National Airways in 1929. Sydney airport was named in his honour. A number of aircraft also carry his name and he is classed as an Australian national hero.
