ON the 25th of May, 1862, at midnight, a dispatch wasreceived by Gov^ernor Sprague, announcing that theenemy in great force were marching on Washington, andcalling for every available man to rally to its defence. Just anhour later the governor issued an order for two regiments ofinfantry, and a battery of artillery for immediate service. Theresponse was prompt and the ranks quickly filled ; marchingorders were given, and the Ninth and Tenth Rhode Island Volun-teers and the Tenth Rhode Island Battery promptly reported forduty at the Capital. 64 NINTH AND TENTH R.
