Lusi mud volcano site. Satellite image showing the site of the mud volcano in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, prior to the eruption. North is at top. In this infrared image, the grey areas are bare ground, the water of the Porong River (horizontal strip, upper centre) appears blue and vegetation appears red. This region has experienced a continuous mud flow from a vent since late May 2006. It is thought to have been triggered by oil and gas drilling, but the drilling company blames an earthquake in the region two days beforehand. Photographed by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite on 11th March 2005. For the same region in 2006 and 2007, after the mud flow has begun, see images E570/292 and E570/293.
