Police motorcycles are used by officers to reach areas that aren’t as easily accessible by other police vehicles. Because of the size of the motorcycle, they can get to an accident or crime scene much more pursuit ? let’s face it, motorbike police love it. But they train hard to learn to do it ? and that’s why mere mortals should keep to the speed limit. Well, most of the time ... Hot-pursuit training is undertaken by cops who have passed the Police Grade One course and extensive measures are taken to ensure members of the public are NOT put at risk. Even when the cops are bombing down country lanes at 120mph ? twice the national speed limit for this sort of road ? the priority is safety. That means they ride with sirens wailing and blue lights flashing ? big potential distractions for the biker, regardless of other hazards. In normal traffic the objective is to maintain smooth, optimum progress depending upon road conditions and the skill of the driver. A police biker will ride up to the legal limit when it is safe to do so and keep his speed constant. Training is done under supervision on regular routes. The bobby has a huge advantage over the rest of us. He rides about five hours every working day along roads where he can learn potential hazards on his patch. On country roads he will practise cornering so that he can maintain speed, where possible, up to the 60mph limit. Only when he is familiar with his patch does the hot pursuit training come. A great adrenalin rush. It’s crucial to have an acute awareness of what might happen and be ready to deal with it when it does. “It’s good advice to most bikers to tell them, ?Be scared.’ But if you are scared it’s back to the classroom.” Police bikers also practise special techniques such as braking on bends ? don’t try it ? which you won’t find in any civilian training manual.
