In August 1761, King George III met - and two weeks later married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelit. The seventeen-year-old Princess appealed to him as a prospective consort partly because she had no experience of power politics or party intrigues. He instructed her on her arrival in London "not to meddle", a precept she was glad to follow.
