During the short time he spent inschool, he earned a scholarship, but could nottake advantage of this opportunity. His fathers health failed, and when Mr. DobbsAvas fourteen, and he was forced to take chargeof the plantation, and earn a livelihood for thefamily. When he was 21 years of age, he droveto Atlanta, forty-five miles distant, in an ox-cartand w^ent to work as porter in the drug store ofAsa G. Candler & Company, at a salary of one. ^^^
