The Book of the Dead, Papyrus of Ani. This image, a favourite upon mummy cases, comes from the Chapter of Causing the Soul to be United in its Body in the Underworld. Above the mummy of Ani, lying on a bier, hovers his soul in the form of a human-headed bird holding a shen, symbol of eternity, in its claws. The deceased prays that his soul may come or be brought back to him, and that it may see the body belonging to it.
